After just three performances the Beethoven opera was taken off stage. This is probably the best recording of the first version of Beethoven's opera which he preferred to call "Leonore." The main competing recording is the somewhat newer version by Gardiner. The problem with the Gardiner is the unfortunate decision to cut the dialogue and use a narrator to further the action. While in 1805, the work was premiered as Leonore – named after the opera’s female protagonist and based on the opera Léonore ou l’amour conjugale (by French revolutionary Jean Nicolas Bouilly), it appeared under the title Fidelio for the first time in 1806, the title chosen by the administration at Theater an der Wien.

Yet after several listenings, it still sounds like a work in progress. Nevertheless, it is fascinating to hear Beethoven’s first thoughts and to discover what he felt should be revised or removed. Fidelio/Leonore received a new overture each time it was revived during Beethoven’s lifetime.
